Forensic Science
Many of us have seen the popular television programs and movies that showcase forensic science,
but how is crime scene investigation really accomplished? We invite students with inquisitive minds to
join our experienced instructors in our Forensic Science class.
No previous science experience is needed, as our instructors start with the basics. Using simulated
and authentic data, students collect and examine fingerprints, analyze bloodstain patterns, and learn
to reconstruct and solve crimes. Students may learn to process biological evidence, trace evidence and
impression evidence (such as fingerprints, shoe prints, and tire tracks), and analyze ballistics information.
Our creative instructors ensure that the presentation of material is never dry and that it is always
connected to a compelling crime story.
Forensic Science applies a broad spectrum of sciences geared towards answering fascinating questions
about crime; our multidisciplinary approach encompasses not only biology, physics, and other sciences,
but also art, law, and writing. Students also consider the legal aspects of forensics, including constitutional
issues related to forensic science. By grappling with the fun, accessible mysteries of forensics,
students acquire objective analytical skills that they can apply in many endeavors.
Forensic Science is inherently a field study, so much of our coursework takes place outside of the
classroom. Field trips might allow students to see a real-life crime lab or talk to working forensic professionals
– a valuable experience that has led many students to explore later careers in criminal labs or
DNA processing labs, as well as in the medical profession, law enforcement, and law school.
