Summer school - it's fun!

New program at Heidelberg offers a taste of college life

TIFFIN -- High school students in grades 8-12 can get a taste of college life in a new program beginning this summer at Heidelberg College.

SummerBerg offers students a unique learning experience in specific areas of interest. Students can choose from nine academic tracks in each two-week session. The tracks include broadcast journalism, creative writing, Chinese, film studies, forensic science, German, pre-law, criminal justice, Spanish and sports management.

But there's more to SummerBerg than class sessions. The program also incorporates all other phases of college life. Each participant will live in a residence hall, attend group activities presented by the college and take part in off-campus field trips, both academic and social in nature. The program is designed to keep students active and engaged, while providing an environment of academia and self-expression.

SummerBerg participants will live in Williard Residence Hall, the newest residence hall on the Heidelberg campus. They'll have access to all of the college's other amenities, including computer labs, tennis courts, athletic fields, the library, the bookstore, the fitness center, the café, wireless internet.

In addition to on-campus activities, SummerBerg students will have the opportunity to travel to nearby cities such as Cleveland, Columbus or Cincinnati for off-campus study programs. For example, students interested in pre-law might sit in on a court session or students enrolled in forensic science might meet detectives or coroners.
Each session also will include a day of fun. After the first week of classes, students can attend Super Saturday - a day at Cedar Point, a Major League Baseball game, a water park or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They also have the option of going to a movie or a play before visiting Cleveland's various museums.

The first session is scheduled for July 15-July 27, and the second session runs from July 29-Aug. 10. Students are welcome to attend both sessions, and have the opportunity to study a different topic at each.
