TIFFIN - The Friends of Beeghly Library at Heidelberg College are preparing to eat their words - literally.
The Friends organization is busy planning for the second annual Edible Book Fest, to be held at 6 p.m. April 1 in the Great Hall.
So, what is an edible book? Participants create a reproduction of a book, a character, a pun on a title - whatever the inspiration, as long as it's edible. Last year's entries included representations of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Dr. Suess's Green Eggs and Ham, Sweeney Todd, The Little Prince, Peter Rabbit and others.
The Edible Book Fest has grown to an international event, with 17 countries participating on or around April 1 each year.
To take part in this just-for-fun competition, simply bring your favorite book to life using food. There is one rule: everything must be edible. Prizes will be awarded in several categories, and then, the participants and guests will "eat their words."
The panel of judges will feature Heidelberg President F. Dominic Dottavio and his wife, Lisette Dottavio.
Attendance does not require an entry to the competition; the event will be open to the community. There is a $10 charge for those who do not prepare an edible book, and students are admitted for $1 or a non-perishable food item to be donated to the FISH Food Pantry. It is free to anyone wishing to enter an edible book.
