Faculty recital to feature work of classical composers

 

TIFFIN - First Lutheran Church will be filled with waves of bold music on Sunday (Feb. 18), as the Heidelberg College music department hosts a faculty recital, featuring Daniel Schuetz, countertenor. Titled Giulio Cesare and more…, Schuetz will perform the works of the well-known classical musicians Johannes Sebastian Bach and George Frederick Handel.

Schuetz will be accompanied by Curtis King, harpsichord and organ, Emilie Sargent, horn, Bogdan Berindean, violin, Margaret Townsend, violin, Razvan Berindean, viola, and Brian Shifflet, cello.

Schuetz holds graduate degrees from Michigan State University and the University of Illinois. He has been teaching voice at Heidelberg for nine years. Recent stage works include roles with the University of Akron Opera at the E.J. Thomas Center, roles with Brevard Music Center, Prairie Fire Theater Company, Peoria Civic Opera, Illinois Opera Theatre, Springfield Opera Theatre and Opera Mid-Michigan. He performed Giulio Cesare in July 2006 at the Bel Canto Northwest in Portland, Ore.

A Heidelberg alumnus, King received his bachelor's degree in music education, with an emphasis in organ. He currently serves as director of music at First Lutheran Church in Tiffin. He is also the vocal music director of Tiffin City Schools, with five choirs under his direction and two choirs for which he serves as assistant director and accompanist.

An instructor of French horn, Sargent teaches Understanding and Enjoying Music and various music business courses at Heidelberg College, where she also serves as music recruitment coordinator. She received her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in horn performance from the University of Michigan. She has held the second horn position with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra since 1998. She is also a member of the Ann Arbor Symphony Brass Quintet and performs in the Faculty Woodwind Quintet at Heidelberg
.
Townsend currently studies with Ioana Galu at Heidelberg. She also teaches violin in the college's Preparatory Department. Townsend is the assistant concertmaster of the Heidelberg College-Community Orchestra. She has performed with the Lima Symphony, Southern Great Lakes Symphony, Firelands Symphony and the Ohio Northern University Orchestra.

Bogdan Berindean, also a violin student of Galu, serves as concertmaster of the Heidelberg College-Community Orchestra. He began playing violin at age 7 in Romania. Earlier in his career, he performed in Spain, Greece and Germany. He currently performs with the Lima Symphony, Great Lakes Symphony, Firelands Symphony and the Ohio Northern University Orchestra.

Shifflet, cello, is currently a master's student at Bowling Green State University. He received his bachelor's degree in music education from Eastern Michigan University. In addition to private teaching, Shifflet performs regularly with the BGSU Philharmonia, Firelands Symphony and the Firelands String Quartet.

Razvan Berindean began playing viola at age 6 in Romania. Currently, he is a viola performance major at Bowling Green State University. He performs in the BGSU Philharmonia, Lima Symphony, Jackson Symphony, Great Lakes Symphony, Dearborn Symphony and the Toledo Ballet Orchestra.
