Traditions
Community Service
– The Phi’s have a long tradition of helping in the community in
various ways. Our current community service projects include helping local
churches, volunteering for CASA and helping when needed on campus.
Phall Retreat
– This event is held at the beginning of the school year, usually at a
Phi alumna’s home. The retreat is an opportunity for active Phi’s to
bond and enjoy each other’s company.
Advisor Tea –
At the beginning of the school year, the Phi’s and their advisors get
together for an informal tea to discuss the goals for the school year.
Novelty Dance
– This event includes any number of themed dances, usually held with
another society on campus. Recent novelty parties have included Avalanche
with Alpha Phi Tau, and 80’s Party with the Excelsior Men’s Society.
Homecoming
Carnival/Parade – In the
past, Heidelberg had a parade and the Phi’s entered a float. Now, the
parade consists of each group carrying their society banner. At the
Homecoming Carnival, the Phi’s enter a booth each year. In 2005, the
Phi’s won the best booth award.
Homecoming Tea
– During Homecoming Weekend, the Phi’s open their hall to all actives,
alumni, advisors and honoraries for an informal gathering.
Fall recruitment
– A series of informal rush events are held each fall, which are open to
all non-Greek women. The events this year included: Tie Dye with a Phi,
Phi Bonfire, Pizza and Self Defense, Create-a-Bagel and Spa Day.
Date Party
– Usually held in the fall, Date Party is a break from the stresses of
the semester. Each active and a date get to dance the night away at a
semi-formal dance.
Parent-Family Tea
– This informal tea is held during Parent-Family Weekend before Greek
Sing. The Phi’s invite their friends and family to Phi Hall to get to
know each other better. After the tea, pictures are taken and friends and
family wish the Phi’s well for their performance during Greek Sing.
Greek Sing
– Formerly known as Intersociety Sing, this event showcases the various
societies on campus in an evening of song and dance. This event usually
raises several thousand dollars, which is donated to a different charity
each year.
Phi-Ex Leaf Rake
– When the leaves start falling, the Phi’s and Ex’s grab their rakes
and help the local elderly rake their lawns.
Reilly and Fiesta with Santa at Phi-Ex Headstart Christmas
Phi-Ex Christmas
Party – The Philalethean
Society, Excelsior Men’s Society, and Headstart of Tiffin work together
each Christmas to put together a party for underprivileged children in the
area. Each child receives a gift and has the chance to meet Santa Claus
and his elves.
Formal Rush
– Held in the winter, formal rush is a very special time for non-Greek
women. During this time, women are able to get to know the four societies
better during the following events: Informationals, Rotationals, Teas and
Preference Parties.
High Tea
– The Phi’s are extremely proud of their annual High Tea held during
formal rush. The evening includes a variety of teas and other beverages,
cakes, pastries and other desserts along with various floral arrangements.
New Member
Education (NME) – Formerly
known as “Pledging.” The purpose of Phi New Member Education is to
instill sisterhood in each new member as well as teach the new member
class the traditions and values of the Philalethean Society through a
series of educational and team building exercises.
Greek Week
– Along with the other seven societies, the Phi’s participate in a
series of competitive events during the spring semester. At the end of
Greek Week, a banquet is held to highlight the accomplishments of Greek
Life at Heidelberg College throughout the year.
Spring Banquet
– This event is a formal dance which is held at the end of the year at
an off campus location.
Sing Out Banquet
– This event showcases the achievements of the society for the year as
well as serves as a way to say farewell to the graduating seniors.
Alumni Tea
– Held during Alumni Weekend (June), the Alumni Tea is a memorable event
each year, which unites actives and alumni. An informal tea is held in
France Great Hall and tours of Phi Hall are conducted. Scrapbooks and
other memorabilia are also present so alumni may reminisce about their
days at Heidelberg.
