In the hectic pace of everyday life (especially in the middle of papers and exams and extracurricular commitments!), it is easy to get caught up in the action and forget to take a good look at what you want out of a major. Second Step: Career Exploration

Once you have narrowed your choices to a few possible majors, it is important to examine the potential career paths available to people in those majors. Additionally, you may want to find out whether those career paths appeal to you or not. Using both print resources in the Career Library and online sources, as well as alumni and people out in the world of work, you can gather information about careers. Many people like to consider factors like on-the-job activities, work environment, advancement opportunities, and earning potential before deciding to further explore different career paths.

Third Step: Evaluation

So you have a few major possibilities, and you like the job opportunities that each of them offers. How do you make the final decision? This is where assessment comes into play again. This is also the perfect time to consult other individuals in your life, from your friends and parents to faculty. You can even talk to your supervisor at your part-time job. Ask them to give you honest feedback on your skills and abilities, and ask about what they think you would be good at. Often, their advice will confirm the choice you are already leaning toward. Listen to your conscience, listen to the people you trust, weigh the pros and cons of each option, and make the best choice for yourself!
