Career Timeline

First Year:

  • Visit the Office of Career Development and check out career information, specifically personality, interest and skill-based inventories to determine what career fields are best for you!
  • Academically speaking, meet with your academic advisor, develop good time management and study skills, and keep your grades in good standing.
  • Get involved in co-curricular activities including student organizations and campus or community activities to begin building your leadership skills.
  • Talk to students about their majors; talk to employers in careers that interest you.
  • Enroll in NDI 116 (Career Exploration) to learn more about choosing your major and finding a career that fits you.

Second Year:

  • Research career fields that interest you by visiting the Office of Career Development Resource Library
  • Confirm your choice of major(s).
  • Research study abroad and internship opportunities.
  • Get to know the professors in your major, and join professional organizations offered by your course of study.
  • Attend Office of Career Development programs and workshops on career planning and career choices.
  • Obtain a part-time or summer job that will help you build your professional skills.
  • Begin to develop your resume using the Resume Starter Worksheet so that you don't forget activities you done during your first few years of college.
  • Enroll in NDI 116 (Career Exploration) if you want more resources to help you make career decisions.

Third Year:

  • Ask to job shadow someone or conduct an informational interview in career professions you think you may have an interest.
  • Explore graduate school or professional school options and requirements.
  • Create a resume-set up an appointment with the Office of Career Development if you need help
  • Obtain an internship or summer job in your chosen field.
  • Continue to build leadership skills.
  • Attend the Office of Career Development programs and workshops on the job search process.

Fourth Year and Beyond:

  • Participate in special events and job fairs offered by the Office of Career Development.
  • Update your resume
  • Complete applications and entrance exams for graduate or professional schools
  • Set up a senior appointment with the Office of Career Development to develop your senior year job search strategy.
  • Create your interviewing portfolio and schedule a mock interview with the office.
  • Sign up for on-campus interviews.
  • Research employers and salaries in your field.
  • Explore college-work transition
  • Send resumes with cover letters to targeted employers.
  • Inform the Office of Career Development of your career decision.
