Interlibrary Loans (ILL)

Most book and media items owned by OPAL or OhioLINK libraries may be checked out online directly by Heidelberg patrons. See OPAL Hints for more information on how to do this. Students at other OPAL or OhioLINK member libraries, and area patrons with guest cards, can request items using the direct borrowing feature. Others should contact their local library to request interlibrary loans.
Use traditional Interlibrary Loan (ILL) for items not listed in the OPAL Libraries Catalog or the OhioLINK Central Catalog.

Articles from Magazines and Journals
Check the OPAL Catalog for the Beeghly Library journal holdings, and the Online Journals and Articles for electronic full-text articles.
Use the Beeghly Library/OhioLINK Research Databases to identify journal articles and to copy and paste the citation information into the Interlibrary Loan Article Request Form
Use traditional Interlibrary Loan to order journal and magazine articles not available in the library collection or online. Please obey coyright guidelines.
Interlibrary Loan is available to current Heidelberg students, faculty, and staff. There is no charge for interlibrary loan service.
Interlibrary Loan Tips
- Check Beeghly Library’s catalog, OPAL and/or the Periodicals Holdings List to avoid requesting owned items.
- Request books from other OPAL and OhioLINK libraries online using your ID# located on the back of your Heidelberg ID. OPAL Hints provides some tips on how to use this service.
- Many journal and magazine articles are now available online through the Electronic Journal Center (EJC), Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe, Academic Search Premier and other research databases.
- Periodical articles cannot be borrowed through OPAL or OhioLINK. Order copies of articles through Interlibrary Loan.
- Fill out the appropriate request form for books not owned by OPAL or OhioLINK libraries, or for journals and magazine articles that are not online or owned by Beeghly Library.
- Provide complete citations. This includes complete name of author(s), Title of book or article, journal name, publishing information for books, volume number, issue and page numbers, and date. Include the six digit ED number when requesting ERIC documents.
- Plan ahead. Many traditional interlibrary loan requests require 1-2 weeks to arrive.
- Be selective. Only request the items you really need.
- Consult with a Reference Librarian for help in interpreting unclear citations and in searching the online resources.
- Maumee/Arrowhead Park students should fax or e-mail interlib@heidelberg.edu their interlibrary loan requests to Beeghly Library. The library fax number is 419-448-2578. The items are sent to the Maumee campus after processing at the main library. See the Maumee information page for more information on library services at Maumee.
- Photocopies are sent to the Campus Center mailboxes of traditional undergraduate students, and to the Dean’s office for faculty. Interlibrary Loan books, as well as OPAL and OhioLINK loans are kept at the Circulation Desk Hold Shelf and should be asked for at the library.
- Graduate students should ask for their photocopies and books at the Circulation Desk Hold Shelf.
- Interlibrary Loan staff will phone when materials are ready to be picked up at the library.
- Items for Maumee students are sent to the Maumee campus.
