The Oxford University Programs

Oxford Term Program
More Information: OSAP Website

Overview:

A recent agreement between Heidelberg College and the Oxford Study Abroad Program (OSAP) allows qualified students to study for one or two semesters at Oxford University in Oxford, England, one of the world's most prestigious, stimulating universities. The agreement facilitates admission to the University for students in good standing in the Honors Program who have completed two years of college. Students not enrolled in the Honors Program also are eligible, and can be recommended for the study-abroad program at Oxford. For further information, see the Dean of Honors Program or contact Dr. Marc J. O'Reilly.

Description of Program:

Typically, students study for one term - either Fall (known as Michaelmas Term at Oxford), Winter (Hilary Term), Spring (Trinity Term), or Summer. Students enroll as Associate Students or Visiting Students at one of Oxford's colleges. Associate Students typically enroll at New College or Trinity College, while Visiting Students enroll at Magdalen College. These three colleges rank among Oxford's finest. Visiting Students pay more but have extra privileges -- they can study at the famous Bodleian library at any time, for example, whereas Associate Students have restricted hours (they can use the library from 5 PM on as opposed to all day).

Course Work (The Tutorial System):

Students typically enroll in two Oxford tutorials. In a tutorial, a student meets with his professor on a regular basis to discuss readings and the student's weekly essay. Associate Students take a Primary tutorial for 9 credits and a Secondary for 5 credits. Visiting students sign up for two Primary tutorials -- for a total of 18 credits. Primary tutorials meet every week for approximately ten (10) weeks, whereas Secondary tutorials meet every other week over a ten-week period.

Financial Aid:

Students can borrow to pay for study at Oxford just as they would to pay for a semester at Heidelberg College. Students should visit the Financial Aid Office for more information.

Excursions:

As part of the OSAP program, students typically visit London, Stonehenge, Bath, Portsmouth, Cambridge, Windsor Castle, and other venues of interest. In past years, students have toured Winchester Cathedral, the Cotswolds, and Hughenden Manor (Benjamin Disraeli's home). Over their course of study, students typically visit many cities and other venues throughout Europe. Affordable fares (bus, train, or plane) can be easily purchased.
