The Heidelberg English Language Institute (HELI) offers intensive English language training combined with cultural orientation to students whose native language is not English. New students are admitted to the Institute in August, January, or May of each year. For all new international students, an in-house TOEFL is given upon arrival on campus, as well as an evaluation of written and speaking skills. Based on the results of English testing, students will be placed in one of three levels best suited to their language skills:
Many HELI students enter the Institute with a TOEFL score of 390. Courses are sequenced according to skill levels of English, ranging from low, intermediate to advanced. All HELI classes are on the regular academic schedule, meeting 20-25 hours (including labs) each week for up to 16 hours of credit. Once competent in English, Heidelberg offers a transition program wherein students may take academic classes while still building English language reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students may earn a total of 12 hours of credit for advanced HELI courses, which may be applied toward a degree at Heidelberg College. A certificate is given to students who successfully complete the HELI program. Heidelberg requires international students to have sufficient knowledge of English before studying in the full academic program. To enter full-time academic status, students must have a TOEFL score of 550, and provide proof of excellent English written and spoken skills on campus. HELI students are offered other educational opportunities:
