A portion of the crew surveys an alfalfa field east of State
Route 124 near the middle of the Buffington Island Battlefield area. |
 |
West of the highway the crew works in a mowed hay field
beneath the bluffs which border the terraces on which the battle was fought. |
 |
Throughout the survey, local battlefield expert Gayle Price
provided Dr. Pratt with information about the history of the Portland area and
the battle of Buffington Island. |
 |
Field recovery activities ceased on Saturday afternoon. This
final crew photo includes the regular crew, volunteers and local resident Mr.
Don Johnson who provided invaluable assistance throughout this project. A
special thanks, Don, from all of us. |

A field project is not finished until the paperwork is
completed. The crew spent their final night in Ripley, W.Va., completing the
artifact inventory and volunteer logs, packing artifacts for the trip to
Heidelberg, and breaking down the field lab. Evening operations continued until
10 P.M. Sunday's activities will involve GPS mapping of the remaining field
specimens, packing the trucks, and making the five hour drive back to Tiffin,
Ohio. |
