Updates from the field, June 10, 1999
field1 June 10 found the crew working north of Old Portland. An artillery shell fragment and several pistol balls were recovered from sweet corn gardens near the Browning Cemetery.
field3 field3bDave Boyd and a Meigs County Historical Museum volunteer recovered one of the pistol balls in the early morning.
field4 In the afternoon, with near record temperatures (upper 90s), the crew moved to the southern edge of the battlefield area to search for evidence of the early morning clash between the forces of General Henry M. Judah and Morgan's brother-in-law, Col. Basil Duke.
field5 A "skirmish line" of detector operators and excavators sweep a mowed hay field west of State Route 124.
field6 Don Johnson (left), a local resident who has been of invaluable help to the Buffington Island Survey, and Dr. Pratt discuss the plans for tomorrow's survey. Meanwhile, the crew surveys a soybean field at the southern end of the battlefield.
