iron shell and lead sabot parts of the cannon projectile |

In
the late morning, survey activities were carried out in the bottom north of
Civil War-era Portland. This house is located on the first terrace above the
old town. |
 |
No Civil War era artifacts were found between the house and
the Old Portland Road. |
 |
East of the abandoned house, toward St. Route 124 a few pistol
and Minie balls and an artillery shell fragment were recovered. |

The blistering heat produced several spectacular dust devils
in the plowed fields across the highway. The largest, about one quarter-mile
from our survey area, lifted dust over 100 meters into the air. After a long
day with little shade, the hotel pool was a welcome relief. |
