Updates from the field, June 9, 1999
field2 field2bDave Boyd and Kevin Nolan recovered an artillery shell fragment exhibiting both the iron shell and lead sabot parts of the cannon projectile
field3 field3bIn the late morning, survey activities were carried out in the bottom north of Civil War-era Portland. This house is located on the first terrace above the old town.
field5 No Civil War era artifacts were found between the house and the Old Portland Road.
field4 East of the abandoned house, toward St. Route 124 a few pistol and Minie balls and an artillery shell fragment were recovered.
field1 The blistering heat produced several spectacular dust devils in the plowed fields across the highway. The largest, about one quarter-mile from our survey area, lifted dust over 100 meters into the air. After a long day with little shade, the hotel pool was a welcome relief.

Check out the next day!
