Updates from the field, June 6, 1999

	The heat and humidity seemed to melt away on Sunday when, just before noon, Dave Boyd detected and Larry Hamilton recovered a small belt plate.
	Tom Garvin and a volunteer from the Meigs County Pioneer and Historical Society recovered a series of Spencer carbine bullets, large caliber Minie balls and pistol slugs.
	After sampling the cornfield by detecting a series of transects, areas of artifact concentration were investigated by intensive survey of a series of 50' x 50' grid squares. Each square was surveyed by two different types of detectors and along two different axes.

	The pink flags mark the site of battlefield artifacts recovered during Sunday's survey. Heidelberg student Melissa Spencer took this photo to provide an "archaeologist's eye-view" of the battlefield.
	Artifacts recovered today include Enfield, Sharps, and musket balls (upper left); six .44 cal. Colt Dragoon pistol slugs (middle left); Spencer carbine bullets and cartridges (upper right); a small belt plate and a Union general service uniform button.
