Updates from the field, May 30, 1999
Buffington Island Confederate Brig. Gen. Morgan raiders were cornered July 19, 1863, by Union forces near Buffington Island, which lies close to the shoreline south of Portland, Ohio.
Field 1 Day 2 put the project crew into a mowed hayfield where they faced completely different field conditions.
Field 2 The hayfield was paced off into 15-meter grid. Each square was surveyed twice by different operators with different frequency instruments and in opposite axis of sweep.
Field 3 With temperatures around 90° F, crews were careful to keep hydrated as they worked through the afternoon.
Field 4 Examination of the afternoon property resulted in several possible artifacts and some assorted contemporary items.
Record Keeping Michelle Pratt keeps meticulous field records that will lead to accurate interpretations of artifact locations later in the project.

Check out the next day!
