Athletic Training is a recognized allied health profession that is dedicated in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries in individuals who pursue a physically active lifestyle. Athletic Trainers work with physicians and other members of the sports medicine team to help athletes and the physically active return quickly and safely to their sport or activity. Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) is the entry-level credential necessary to legally practice athletic training. In Ohio and various other states, a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) must also be licensed through their respective licensing boards. To be eligible for the NATABOC examination, a candidate must graduate from an accreditated ATEP through CAATE.
The ATEP is designed to prepare students for a career in the Athletic Training profession in a variety of settings. The ATEP curriculum is based upon the 1999 National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Education Competencies. The program has two components: didactic and clinical. The didactic component includes traditional coursework and laboratory exercises. The clinical component requires actual practical experiences in a supervised environment. All students in the program will be required to obtain a minimum of 800 supervised contact hours in a variety of athletic training and allied health settings. Upon completion of the ATEP, the student will be recommended for a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Athletic Training.
Admission to the ATEP is competitive and selective. Completion of the application standards does not guarantee admission into the ATEP. Final admission into the ATEP rests with the decision of the ATEP Selection Committee.
