Women’s Soccer Suffers 5-0 Setback To Chicago In Season Opener

The Heidelberg College women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 setback to visiting University of Chicago today at Mayer Field in the season opener for both teams.

Chicago entered the game ranked No. 24 in the NCAA Division III preseason poll according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first half of action, despite the Maroons recording 19 shots to the Berg's two. Heidelberg’s goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) turned away 11 shots in the opening stanza. The freshman goalkeeper would play all 90:00 minutes in goal and rounded out the day with 17 saves in her collegiate debut.

Chicago's Christine Farmer found the back of the net, with the eventual game-winning goal, just under two minutes into the second half. The Maroon’s added four more insurance goals, including two more courtesy of Farmer.

Heidelberg returns to action Sept. 6 when Alma visits Mayer Field for a 5:00 p.m. start.
