Heidelberg Forces 33 Turnovers In 72-53 Win Over Huntingdon

Junior guard Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) scored a season-high 25 points, pulled down nine rebounds and grabbed six steals to lead the Heidelberg College women’s basketball team to a 19-point win over Huntingdon College. Heidelberg improves to 7-3 on the season while Huntingdon falls to 2-6.

Besides Campbell, the Berg’s Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Coming off the bench in her fourth collegiate game, freshman Alyssa Esposito (Brecksville, Ohio / Brecksville-Broadview Heights) scored a career-high 12 points in 14 minutes of action.

Dusti Doss led the Lady Eagles with 13 points and eight rebounds. Thyra Masalin came off the bench and contributed 11 points.

Heidelberg opened the contest with an 11-2 run in the contest’s first six minutes by forcing seven Huntingdon turnovers. The Lady Eagles closed the gap to 20-17 with 3:41 remaining in the half, but a three-pointer and a layup while being fouled by Campbell gave Heidelberg a nine point lead.

The Lady Eagles twice cut it to three in the final two minutes of the half, but a shot from beyond the arc by the Berg’s Esposito and a block by freshman Betsy Shrider (Mount Blanchard, Ohio / Riverdale) preserved the Berg 31-25 lead at intermission.

In the second half, Heidelberg opened up an 11-point lead six minutes into the second half and never led by less than double digits. Campbell gave Heidelberg their largest lead at 69-49 of the game on a shot from beyond the arc with 1:37 left. Shrider hit a layup at the buzzer top give the Berg a 19-point win.

For the game, Heidelberg hit 27 of 75 (36 percent) from the floor. The Berg outscored the Lady Eagles 14-5 in second-chance points and 33-7 in points off turnovers.

Heidelberg returns to action tomorrow when the face Alma in the championship game of the Heidelberg Holiday Alumni Classic at 3 p.m.
