Women's Basketball Tops Visiting Mount Union, 68-60 Ohio Athletic Conference foe Mount Union College scored the first basket of the game, but the Heidelberg College women's basketball team responded with an 8-0 run to take an 8-2 advantage with 15:57 on the clock and never looked back. The win snapped a two-game slide for the Berg and improves its overall record to 5-2 and 1-2 in the OAC, whole Mount Union drops to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in league action. Mount Union's Ashley Rose quieted the Berg's early run with a lay up, but Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) answered back to put Heidelberg up by six point once again, 10-4. The Purple Raiders knotted the game on two occasions before heading into the break, but Heidelberg never relinquished the lead. With the game tied at 23-23 Campbell hit her third from long range in the first period to ignite an 8-2 Berg run to end the half and give Heidelberg a 31-25 lead at the intermission.
Freshman Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) extended the Berg's lead to nine points, 34-29, on a three pointer on the first possession following the break. Mount Union slowly chipped away at the Berg lead and tied the game at 38-38 with 13:04 on the clock following two free throws from Meghan Simons. Heidelberg freshman Jessica Jennette (LaRue, Ohio / Elgin) checked into the game and scored four-straight points to put the Berg up by four, 42-20, with 12:18 remaining in the game.
Mount Union pulled within two points, 46-44, following a jumper from Haley Drayer with 8:33 on the clock. Heidelberg went on to outscore the Purple Raiders 22-16 to post the 68-60 OAC victory. Helping to seal the victory for the Berg was an 8-for-10 showing from the charity stripe over the final 1:50 of the ballgame.
For the game, Heidelberg was victorious despite being out shot 42.4 percent (25-for-59) to 39.3 percent (22-for-56) and out rebounded, 41-33.
Campbell led the way for the Berg with a game-high 18 points, 14 coming in the first half, to go along with a team-high seven rebounds and five steals. Also reaching double figures was sophomore Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) with 17. Backing Campbell on the glass was Jennette with five boards in just 10 minutes of action.
Simons led three in double figures for Mount Union with 13 points off the bench. Alicia Williams recorded a double-double, finishing with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Heidelberg faces a six-day lay off and returns to action Friday, Dec. 15 when they travel to New Concord, Ohio to face Muskingum. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
