Campbell Hits Jumper In Double Overtime As Heidelberg Wins 64-63 The Heidelberg College women’s basketball team defeated Lake Erie College 64-63 in double overtime on a buzzer-beater by junior Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial). The Berg improves to 3-0 for the season while the Storm remains winless at 0-3.
Heidelberg’s Campbell led all scorers with 22 points. She also grabbed 12 boards to tally her eighth career double-double. Sophomore Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) contributed 13 points while senior Kyle Davison (Ravenna, Ohio / Hudson) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and added 11 points for her first career double-double. Bethel Angela led Lake Erie with 17 points.
In the first half, both teams could not extend leads to more than four points. The storm held a four-point advantage at intermission, 28-24. Heidelberg shot 9-28 (32.1 percent) for the opening half while Lake Erie managed to hit 11 of 31 field goals (35.5 percent).
The Heidelberg offense was more efficient in the second half, shooting 11-23 (47.8 percent) from the field. However, the game remained as close as both teams only managed five-point leads.
The Storm held a four-point lead with 4:18 remaining but Heidelberg’s Skolnicki hit back to back jumpers and tied the game for the eighth time, 47-47. The Storm quickly answered with a jumper, but Skolnicki answered right back at the two-minute mark with a jumper and her sixth straight point.
Both teams would exchange baskets and turnovers to send the game into overtime deadlocked at 51.
In the first overtime, Heidelberg’s Davison would nail a jumper and a free-throw to give the Berg a 54-51 advantage. Lake Erie’s Bethel Angela tied the game for the 11th time on a shot from beyond the arc with three minutes remaining. After traded baskets, the contest went into double overtime. In the second overtime, Lake Erie took a three-point lead, 63-60, with a three-pointer by Melissa Woods with 54 seconds remaining. Junior Hollie Knott (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) cut the deficit to one 21 seconds later with a jumper. On Lake Erie’s next possession, Heidelberg freshman Jessica Jennette (LaRue, Ohio / Elgin) stepped into the passing lane to record her team-leading fourth steal of the game. The final 10 seconds saw a flurry of shots for the Berg before the game-winner. Davison missed a pair of shots before Campbell nailed a jumper at the buzzer off an offensive rebound to give the Berg the win. Heidelberg returns to action Monday at Ohio Wesleyan.
