Heidelberg Falls Short In Overtime

The Heidelberg College women’s basketball team overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but a 6-0 John Carroll run to end the game led to an 80-76 Blue Streaks win. John Carroll improves to 8-14 overall and 5-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Heidelberg falls to 11-11 and 4-11 in the OAC.

             

Heidelberg’s sophomore Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) scored a career high 27 points on 11-20 shooting and a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe. Junior Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) contributed 18 while junior Maureen Hunter (Toledo, Ohio / Notre Dame) added 14. Senior Kyle Davison (Ravenna, Ohio / Hudson) led the team with eight boards.

             

Jessica Gibbons led John Carroll with 22 while Allison Kerns chipped in 16. Rachel Price contributed 15 points for the Blue Streaks.

             

Both teams played back and fourth in the games opening minutes, but a pair of three-pointers by Campbell and Davison gave put the Berg up 16-10 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.

             

With the score tied at 26, the Blue Streaks hit a layup and two shots from behind the arc to spark an 18-5 to go up 44-31, John Carroll’s largest lead in the first half. Heidelberg’s Skolnicki added a jumper to trim the deficit to 44-33 at intermission.

             

In the second half, John Carroll jumped out to a 53-39 lead, but a 16-1 run by Heidelberg capped by a pair from the line by Hunter gave the Berg their first lead of the second half.

             

The Blue Streaks would not quit and took a 62-58 on a layup by Tracey Prosinki.  With the score tied at 67, Brittany Skolnicki used all the iron on a jumper to give Heidelberg a 69-67 lead with 30 seconds left. John Carroll missed a quick shot and Hunter put the Berg up three with a free throw. 

             

With 4.6 seconds left, John Carroll’s Gibbons nailed a deep three to send the game into overtime tied at 70.

             

In overtime, Heidelberg struck first on a Skolnicki layup, but Gibbons answered for John Carroll with her fourth field goal from behind the arc. Skolnicki added a pair from the line and another layup to put the Berg up 76-74 with 2:34 remaining in overtime.  It was the last score for Heidelberg, as John Carroll closed out the game 6-6 from the line for an 80-76 win.
