Capital Upends Women's Basketball

The Heidelberg College women's basketball team suffered an 81-46 setback at the hands of host Capital University tonight in Bexley, Ohio. The loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Berg and drops their overall record to 8-4 and their Ohio Athletic Conference record to 1-4, while Capital improves to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the OAC.

Leading the way for Heidelberg was freshman Stacey Barker (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) with a career-high 11 points coming off the bench. Fellow freshman Jessica Jennette (LaRue, Ohio / Elgin) and junior Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) contributed six points apiece. Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) led the way with five rebounds.

Daniele Manalac led the way for Capital with a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds.

As a team, Heidelberg shot just 26.3 percent (15-of-57) compared to a 53.6 clip (30-of-56) from Capital. The Crusaders also held a 50-24 margin on the glass.

Heidelberg trailed 10-6 at the 13:08 mark of the first half, but was outscored 8-2 over the next four minutes to fall behind 18-8. The Berg pulled within single digits, 26-18, following a lay up from Campbell with 3:49 to play in the half, but Capital closed the half on a 13-3 run to hold a 39-20 lead at the break.

Capital pushed its lead to 30 points, 53-23, just four minutes into the second half, but a lay up from Campbell and back-to-back three-pointers from Barker and Morgan Harrigan (Urbana, Ohio / Urbana) cut the Crusaders lead to 24, 55-31, with 11:36 to play in the game. Capital responded with an 11-0 run to push the lead back to 34 points. Heidelberg and Capital played even over the final 7:41, but Capital earned the OAC victory, 81-46, at the final horn.

Heidelberg returns to action at home against Otterbein Jan. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
