Heidelberg Volleyball Pushes Perfect Record To 5-0 The Heidelberg College volleyball team continues on its perfect streak, which now stands at 5-0, with a three-game sweep over visiting Defiance (30-20, 30-20, 30-22).
A service ace by sophomore Emily Hurlburt (St. Mary's, Ohio/Memorial) pushed the Berg to a 12-5 lead in game one and they never looked back. Game two however was more of a back and forth battle until two straight points from Hurlburt broke a 15-15 tie in which the Berg went on to win 30-20. To help complete the three game sweep senior Megan Kempf (Olmsted Twp., Ohio/St. Joseph Academy) served four straight points, which included three service aces to give the Berg a 7-2 advantage and momentum for the game three victory.
Heidelberg was led by junior middle hitter Laurie Patrick (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) with a total of 13 kills in the match. Following Patrick was Whitney Magers (Green Springs, Ohio/Old Fort) and Kelsey Elliott (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) with seven kills each.
Leading the offensive explosion for the Berg was freshman Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio/ Old Fort) with 38 assists and also chipped in five kills. Leading the way defensively was Kempf with 15 digs, followed by Whitney Magers with eight.
"We came out fired up and pushed early, but became relaxed late in the match," said seventh-year head coach Jason Miller. "We're happy with the win, but need to cut down on some unforced errors." Heidelberg returns to action at the Marcia French Memorial Tournament hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College Sept. 8-9. The Berg is opens up tournament action against Kalamazoo at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
