Otterbein Takes Two From The Berg In Tiffin

The Heidelberg College softball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to visiting Otterbein College today at Mayer Field. The Cardinals held off a late Heidelberg rally to win 3-2 in game one and posted a 7-5 win in the night cap. The sweep improved Otterbein to 21-15 overall and 9-9 in the OAC, while Heidelberg fell to 6-32 overall and 2-16 in league action.

Otterbein held a 3-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Rachael Everhart (Huntsville, Ohio / Indian Lake) led the inning off with a walk and Jennifer Kerman (Willowick, Ohio / Regina) followed with a single. Freshman Katie Curry (Delaware, Ohio / Buckeye Valley) pinch hit and recorded an RBI double to pull the Berg within a run, but the Berg would leave the game-tying and winning runs on the base paths.

Heidelberg scored its first run of the contest in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora). Foust knocked in Coree Price (Prospect, Ohio / North Union) who led the inning off with a single.

Katherine Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) suffered the hard fought loss on the mound in game one. Allenspach gave up just six hits and no earned runs, while striking out four.

In the night cap, Heidelberg and Otterbein exchanged a run each after one inning of action. The Cardinals plated two more runs in the third, but Heidelberg responded with a run in the third and the fourth to tie the game for the second time. Heidelberg gave up five hits in the fifth inning, which plated two Cardinal runs and gave Otterbein a 5-3 lead.

Heidelberg and Otterbein exchanged a run apiece in each of the final two innings, but the five-hit, two-run fifth proved to be the difference in the final score. Heidelberg left its game-tying runs on the base paths.

Leading the Heidelberg offense on the day was Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush) with four hits and three coming the game two. Price, Curry and Kerman all finished with three hits apiece.

Heidelberg concludes its 2007 season at the University of Findlay May 1. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
