Heidelberg Drops Two At ONU

The Heidelberg College softball team dropped a doubleheader to Ohio Northern University at the ONU Softball Field.  ONU won game one 5-1 and followed that up with an 8-6 win in the second game.  This now improves ONU to 16-4 overall and 4-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) and drops the Berg to 3-17 and 0-4.

In game one there was a slow start to the game as neither team could score a run in the first three innings.  However in the fourth inning Ohio Northern put up three runs on two hits.  Heidelberg put a dent in its deficit in the top of the fifth when Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) reached base on an error by Ohio Northern that scored Jerrica Sweetnich (Garfield Hts., Ohio / Garfield Hts.).  Sweetnich reached base on a single.  However at the Polar Bears next at bat they put up two more runs to put the game away.

Also recording hits for the Tricolor were; Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush), Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf), Rachael Everhart (Huntsville, Ohio / Indian Lake), Katie Curry (Delaware, Ohio / Buckeye Valley) and Dessiree Burch (Prospect, Ohio / Elgin).

In game two, Heidelberg had started with a very strong first, scoring four runs on four hits.  The scoring started when Gerdeman scored on a fielder’s choice, off the bat of Killoran.  Next up was Everhart who doubled and scored Coree Price (Prospect, Ohio / North Union).  Burch continued the hot streak with a single that scored Everhart.  Finally, Jennifer Kerman (Willowick, Ohio / Regina) scored the last run of the inning on a wild pitch.  Kerman got on base on a walk.  The Polar Bears scored one run in their half of the first.

The Berg continued its hot offense in the second when Gerdeman had a solo home run to start the inning making the score 5-1.  OhioNorthern cut into Heidelberg’s lead when they scored three runs in the third.  ONU took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth scoring three on four hits.  The Berg tried to make a come back in the top of the seventh when Foust hit the second home run of the game for the Tricolor, but that was as close as the Berg would get.

Leading the way for the Berg on the day were Foust and Gerdman with a home run apiece and Burtch, Everhart and Price with two hits each.

Heidelberg will be back home Friday April 9, starting time is 1:00 p.m.
