Wittenberg Takes Twinbill From Heidelberg

The Heidelberg College softball team suffered a doubleheader setback at Wittenberg University today. The Berg dropped the opener 6-4 and fell 6-1 in the nightcap. Heidelberg now stands at 3-9 overall on the year, while Wittenberg improved to 13-7.

In game one, Heidelberg jumped out to a 1-0 lead after its first at bat following an RBI double from Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) that scored Coree Price (Prospect, Ohio / North Union). Wittenberg responded with a combined two runs in the second and third innings to hold a 2-1 advantage.

Heidelberg did not go away and took advantage of all its offensive opportunities in the fourth inning. Jerrica Sweetnich (Garfield Heights, Ohio / Garfield Heights) led the inning off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a Wittenberg error. Sweetnich was smart on the base paths and eventually scored on an error by the third baseman.

Wittenberg added four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning and the Berg was unable to recover. Heidelberg plated two runs in the fifth inning on a Rachael Everhart (Huntsville, Ohio / Indian Lake) single , but that would be as close as Heidelberg would get.

Stacy Hempy (North Lewisburg, Ohio / Triad) suffered the loss on the mound, scattering six hits, while striking out one in 4.0 innings of work.

Offensively the Berg was led by Price with a 3-for-4 outing and two runs scored. Also recording multiple hits was Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) with two.

In the nightcap, Wittenberg plated its six runs in the first two innings and Heidelberg did not respond. Crystal Killioran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush) knocked in Price on a two-out single in the third inning for the lone ’Berg run in the game.

Katherine Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) took the loss on the mound. Allenspach pitched 4.0 innings and scattered seven hits. Killoran finished game two 3-for-3, while Price and Foust went 2-for-4.

Heidelberg returns to action in its home opener March 28 against Bluffton. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. at Mayer Field.
