Softball Opens 2007 At 2-2

The Heidelberg College softball team has opened up the 2007 season with a 2-2 record. The Berg is taking part in the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. Action began for Heidelberg with a hard fought 7-6 setback to Emerson College on Sunday, but fought back and won its second game, 5-4, over Ferrum College. Monday began with Heidelberg holding Waynesburg College scoreless in a 5-0 win, but two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning by Bethany College handed the Berg a 2-1 loss in its fourth outing on the year.

Through four games, sophomore designated player Crystal Killoran (South Euclid, Ohio / Brush) leads the way, hitting .538 (7-for-13) with four RBI and one double. Also providing a strong bat early in the year has been junior third baseman Ashley Foust (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora). Foust is hitting .455 (5-for-11), while newcomer Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) leads the way with four runs scored and two doubles, while standings second on the team with six hits and three RBI.

On the mound, Heidelberg has the one-two punch of sophomore Katherine Allenspach (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) and junior Stacy Hempy (North Lewisburg, Ohio / Triad). Hempy picked up the win over Ferrum, scattering nine hits and striking out five would-be batters. Allenspach struck out two in the win over Waynesburg.
