Beebe And Depinet Lead Berg Track & Field At All-Ohio The Heidelberg College men’s and women’s track and field teams, under the guidance of head coach Kevin Lucas, had a day filled with a wealth of praise and accomplishment at the 2007 All-Ohio Division Track and Field Meet hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. The men’s team took home runner-up honors, while the women finished seventh overall in the 18 team field.
The meet was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 14, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
Ohio Northern University won the men’s side with 119.5 points compared to Heidelberg’s 106. Host Ohio Wesleyan (84), Capital University (83) and Marietta College (64) rounded out the top-five for the men’s side. On the women’s side, Heidelberg accumulated 49 team points. Ohio Wesleyan won the meet with 169 team points, while Baldwin-Wallace (107.5) took home runner-up honors. Leading the way on the men’s team was a meet record performance by sophomore Cory Beebe (Medina, Ohio / Cloverleaf) in the 400-meter hurdles. Beebe finished in a season-best and meet record of 52.98. Also claiming championships on the day was the 4x400-meter relay team of Beebe, Justin Zuchowski (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick), Justin Shields (Lorain, Ohio / Admiral King) and Greg Tyson, Jr. (Lima, Ohio / Lima Senior) (3:17.78) and Tyson, Jr. in the long jump with a leap of 22'3.75". Earning runner-up finishes was Tyson, Jr. in the triple jump (43'2.25"), Scott Lasch (Huron, Ohio / Huron) in the 1,500-meter run (3:56.20), Shields in the 400-meter dash (49.85) and the 4x100-meter relay team of Julius Higginbotham (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria), Steven Malone (Shake Heights, Ohio / Shaker Heights), Paris Hilliard (Lorain, Ohio / Admiral King) and Shields (42.52). Also recording strong performances for the meet on the men’s side with third place finishes was Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) in the long jump with a jump of 21'6.25" and Mark Childs (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) in the 800-meter run (1:56.45). Freshman Devin Butcher (Bowling Green, Ohio / Bowling Green) finished fourth in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 32:50.16, while Lasch and Jeremy Wysocki (Toledo, Ohio / Central Catholic) rounded out top-five placers with fourth place finishes in the 5,000-meter run (15:34.53) and the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9”51.34), respectively. Freshman Jamie Depinet (New Riegel, Ohio / New Riegel) led the women’s team with two individual school record performances and joined forces with Angela Zellner (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg), Nikki Jones (Fremont, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon) and Jaimee Olmstead (Stryker, Ohio / Stryker) to set a new school record in the 4x400-meter relay. Depinet took second place in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Depinet’s new school record in the 200-meter dash stands at 25.79, while the 400-meter record now is 58.01. The quartet of Depinet, Jones, Zellner and Olmstead crossed the finish line second at the meet in a school record time of 4:00.38, which tops the previous record of 4:04.47 set in 2004. Taking third was the 4x100-meter relay team of Zellner, Jones, Depinet and Paige Reiman (Defiance, Ohio / Tinora) in a time of 50.62, while Jones finished fifth in both the 800-meter run (2:20.81) and the high jump (5'1.75") and Zellner took fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.07). Seniors Jessica Peters (DeGraff, Ohio / Indian Lake) and Stacy D’Onofrio (Cleveland, Ohio / John Marshall) led the Berg throwers. Peters finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 36'6.25" and D’Onofrio stood sixth in the javelin throw (104').
