Heidelberg Men Win OAC Gold Meet; Women Take Fourth

In an Ohio Athletic Conference track and field meet hosted by Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, the Heidelberg College men’s team dominated the pack. The men’s team topped the five-team field with 148 points. Earning runner-up honors was Ohio Northern University with 143 points followed by host Wilmington (105), Otterbein College (103) and Capital University (74).

             

On the women’s side, Otterbein claimed the team championship with 155 points followed by Ohio Northern (136), Capital (120), Heidelberg (87) and Wilmington (79).    

             

En route to its team championship, the men’s team took home six individual championships led by Greg Tyson, Jr.’s (Lima, Ohio / Lima Senior) two. Tyson, Jr. won the 200-meter dash in 22.37 and leaped to a first in the long jump with a jump of 21'2". Getting things started early on the track was senior Jeremy Wysocki’s (Toledo, Ohio / Central Catholic) win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:52.05). Also claiming championships was Cory Beebe (Medina, Ohio / Cloverleaf) in the 400-meter dash (49.27) and freshmen Mark Childs (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) in the 800-meter run (1:56.90) and Jacob Lemon (Oak Harbor, Ohio / Oak Harbor) in the 5,000-meter run (16:16.68).

             

Backing Beebe in the 400-meter dash was Justin Shields (Lorain, Ohio / Admiral King) (50.36) and Justin Zuchowski (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) (50.72) with a second and third place finishes, respectively.

             

Earning runner-up finishes for the men’s team was Julius Salgado (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont Ross) in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.28, Julius Higginbotham (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) in the long jump with a leap of 20'5.75" and the 4x100-meter relay team of Higginbotham, Steven Malone (Shaker Heights, Ohio /  Shaker Heights), Paris Hilliard (Lorain, Ohio / Admiral King) and Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) in a time of 43.52.

             

On the women’s side freshman Jamie Depinet (New Riegel, Ohio / New Riegel) led the way with a first place finish in the 400-meter dash. Depinet crossed the finish line in a school record 58.42, which topped her own school mark of 58.55 she set in her last outing. Backing Depinet in the 400-meter dash was Angela Zellner (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg) with a second place finish in 59.39. Zellner and Depinet finished second (26.40) and third (26.63), respectively in the 200-meter dash

             

Racing to a third place finish on the track for the women’s team was Tabitha Grim (Sullivan, Ohio / Black River) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (13:13.92), Paige Reiman (Defiance, Ohio / Tinora) in the 100-meter hurdles (16.64) and Nikki Jones (Fremont, Ohio / Hopewell Loudon) in the 800-meter run (2:22.03).
