Heidelberg Defeats Marietta 3-1 Sophomore Brad Howell first goal of career is game winner The Heidelberg College men’s soccer team scored three goals in the second half to defeat Marietta College 3-1 Saturday afternoon in Marietta. Heidelberg improves to 5-8-3 and 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Marietta falls to 2-13 and 0-7 in conference play.
Playing in his final road game of his collegiate career, Heidelberg senior Sam Sunseri (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) began the scoring in the 59th minute when his header found the back of the net on a cross from sophomore Brad Howell (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington).
Howell scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 75:35 mark when a Casey Numetko (Tucson, Ariz. / Sabino) cross produced a scramble in front of the Marietta goal. Howell hammered home the goal, his first of his collegiate career.
In the 83rd minute, Howell gave Heidelberg a three-goal advantage when he found the back of the net off a rebound of his own shot. For the game, Howell scored two goals and added an assist for a total of five points.
Marietta avoided the shutout in the game’s final minute when Bradley Baweja scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Joel Nau.
Starting between the pipes for Heidelberg was sophomore Brian Benson (Bay Village / Bay) who grabbed four saves on five shots faced and improved to 3-6-1 on the year.
Heidelberg outshot Marietta 14-5, including 9-0 in the first half. The Student Princes placed 10 shots on goal compared to the Pioneers five.
Heidelberg returns to action Tuesday when they host Otterbein. Game time with the Cardinals is set for 4 p.m.
