Heidelberg And Alma Battle To 1-1 Tie

The Heidelberg College men's soccer team scored a goal in the first half, but Alma netted a lone goal in the second half to force a 1-1 tie.

In the 24th minute, senior Samuel Sunseri (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) crossed the ball to senior Brent Kehrle (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington) in front of the Alma goal. Kehrle's shot curved into the left corner of the net to give the Student Princes a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same heading into halftime.

Alma would answer in the second half on a lone goal. A cross by the Scots' Frankie Brun was misplayed into the goal by a 'Berg defender.

Both teams had opportunities in the first overtime. Heidelberg had two corner kicks to try and set up the game-winning goal but the Alma defense would not relent.

Shortly into the second overtime, Alma had a corner kick with one minute to try to win the game. Alma put a head on the corner but sophomore goalie Brian Benson (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay) grabbed the save.

Heidelberg outshot Alma 26-20, but the Scots led 14-11 in shots on goal. Benson played all 110:00 minutes in goal for the Student Princes, grabbing 12 saves and improving to 0-1-1 on the year. Heidelberg also had one save as a team.

Heidelberg returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Adrian, Mich., to take on Siena Heights. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
