Late Free Throws Lifts Myers Over The Berg

The Heidelberg College men's basketball team lost to Myers University by a final score of 63-62 in Seiberling Gymnasium on the campus of Heidelberg College tonigth. The win improves Myers to 1-6 overall on the season, while the Berg falls to 2-3.

Heidelberg opened up the game with a 7-0 run, capped off by a dunk from Greg Tyson (Lima, Ohio/ Lima Senior), but a timeout by Myers ignited a 9-2 run that knotted the score 9-9 with just under five minutes into the game. Heidelberg pushed out to a five point lead, 14-9, with a three-pointer by Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby) with 12:38 on the clock. Myers answered back with a 7-0 run of their own to take its first lead of the game, 16-14, courtesy of back to back buckets by Ruben Boyd. Myers went on to outscore the Berg 25-12, taking a 41-26 lead into the half.

In the second half Heidelberg pulled within one point on five occasions and finally went on top with two free throws by Tyson with 3:17 left in the game. Contributing largely to the Berg’s comeback was junior Bryan Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio/ Brunswick), scoring 11 second half points.

Heidelberg held a one point advantage for 1:22, until Myers' Anthony Lumpkin answered with a three-pointer to give Myers a 61-59 lead.  Following a timeout by the Berg, Tyson answered with a layup to tie the game for the sixth time.

Heidelberg and Myers traded possessions, and a foul by Matt Eberle (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) sent the Mustangs D’Veron Harris to the line with four seconds remaining in the game. Harris sank both free throws to put Myers on top 63-61. The Berg went the length of the floor and Tyson drew a foul in the middle of the lane with one tenth of a second on the clock. Tyson was able to connect on his first one, but the second sailed to the right of the rim into a host of hands as time expired to give Myers the win.

Leading the way for Heidelberg was Schmidt with 15 points and a team high nine rebounds, followed by Tyson with 13 points. Junior Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio/ Western Reserve) rounded out three in double figures for the Berg with 10 points.

Heidelberg returns to action at Wilmington Dec. 2 at 3:00.
