The Berg Trounces The Terriers 88-50 Sophomore Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) scored a season-high 22 points on five for seven shooting from behind the arc to lead the Heidelberg College men's basketball team past Hiram 88-50. The Student Princes won their third straight game and improved to 6-4 while the Terriers fall to 2-6.
Senior Ron Higgins (Vermilion, Ohio / Firelands) and junior Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) also reached double figures for the Student Princes with 12 points apiece. Ian Pfouts led the Terriers with 19 points.
The Berg wasted no time taking control of the game, running to a 31-6 lead in the game’s first 10 minutes. Hiram cut the deficit to 20, but a three-pointer by sophomore Jake Hessey (Crestline, Ohio / Colonel Crawford) and a pair of three-pointers by Szalay gave Heidelberg a 29-point lead. The Berg took a 56-23 halftime advantage on 22-36 (61.1 percent) shooting from the field.
The Heidelberg lead ballooned to 44 in the second half before Hiram cut the final deficit to 38. For the game, the Student Princes held the Terriers to 21-75 (28 percent) shooting from the field. Heidelberg controlled the boards 52-40, including 28-12 in the first half.
Heidelberg returns to action Dec. 30 when they host Penn State-Altoona. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
