Balanced Scoring Lifts Heidelberg Over Muskingum 76-66

Junior Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) opened the contest with a three-point shot and the Heidelberg College men’s basketball team never looked back in a 10-point win over visiting Muskingum. The Student Princes improve to 5-4 and 3-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play while the Muskies fall to 4-4 and 0-4 in the conference.

             

Junior Greg Tyson (Lima, Ohio / Lima Senior) recorded his second double-double in his career with 13 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. Sophomore Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio /Clearview) led the team with 14 points, all scored in the second half. Senior Ron Higgins came off the bench for 10 points, including a 6-for-7 mark from the charity stripe.

             

Lemmon and junior Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) added nine points apiece for Heidelberg while freshman Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) added eight.

             

For Muskingum, Brandon Todd led the team with 16 while Pat Byrne added 15 and eight rebounds.

             

Heidelberg jumped out to a 23-6 lead behind nine points from Lemmon. Muskingum cut the deficit to 10 with two minutes remaining in the half, but an offensive rebound and a jumper at the buzzer by Calver gave Heidelberg a 38-23 halftime lead.

             

In the second half, Heidelberg held off any comeback attempt by Muskingum. The Muskies cut the lead to 10 with 16:35 remaining in the game, but a three-pointer from Shriver and a layup by Tyson ended a 7-0 run by the Muskies.

             

Muskingum cut the Heidelberg lead to as small as nine with 2:18 remaining in the game, but the Student Princes held off the Muskies by going 8-for-8 from the line over the final two minutes of the ballgame.

             

For the game, Heidelberg out rebounded the Muskies 40-34, including 21-13 in the first half. The Berg added nine steals, five blocks and 11 point off of offensive rebounds. The Student Princes scored 20 points off 14 Musky turnovers and outscored the Muskingum bench 32-15.

             

Heidelberg returns to action Thursday when they host Hiram. Tip-off with the Terriers is set for 7:30 p.m.
