Heidelberg Defeats Mount Union 68-61

Trailing 54-53 with 4:45 remaining in the game, the Heidelberg College men’s basketball team went on a 13-2 run to defeat Mount Union 68-61. The Berg improves to 4-4 on the year and 2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Purple Raider fell to 4-2 in the young season and 1-1 in the OAC.

Heidelberg junior Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) led all scorers with 17 points, while senior Ron Higgins (Vermilion, Ohio / Firelands) came off the bench for 12 points and a team-high seven defensive rebounds. Junior Greg Tyson (Lima, Ohio / Senior) added 11 points and six rebounds.

For the Purple Raiders, Sam King tallied 14 points while Stu Anglum recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.

Mount Union jumped out to a 17-10 lead with 10:39 left in the first half, but a layup by Higgins and a three-pointer by Lemmon cut the deficit to two. Heidelberg took their first lead of the ballgame at the four-minute mark on a pair from the charity stripe by Greg Tyson, but Mount Union would end the half on a 10-4 run to take the lead at half 35-30.

With the Purple Raiders leading 54-53 with five minutes remaining in the game, junior Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) nailed his only shot beyond the arc in the game. The shot started a 13-2 run that sealed the win for the Student Princes.

The Berg shot 23-50 for the game (46 percent) and out-rebounded Mount Union 42-34.

Heidelberg returns to action next Saturday when they host Muskingum. Tip-off with the Fighting Muskies is scheduled for 3 p.m.
