Bluffton Battles To 75-73 Win Over Heidelberg The Heidelberg College men’s basketball team fell to Bluffton College 75-73 Saturday afternoon in Bluffton. Heidelberg falls to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference teams. Bluffton improves to 4-1 on the young season. Four of the Heidelberg starters reached double-digit scoring. Junior Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) led all scorers for the game with 18 points on 5-6 shooting from both the field and charity stripe. Lemmon also led the team with seven boards. Junior Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) contributed 13 points and sophomore Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) chipped in 11 points. Junior Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) added 10. Mike Anthony paced the Beavers with 17 points. To begin the game, Heidelberg took a 6-0 lead with a jumper by Szalay and lay ups by Lemmon and Schmidt. After the Beavers fought back and tied the game at 11, Heidelberg went on a 10-3 run highlighted by two dunks by junior Greg Tyson (Lima, Ohio / Lima Senior) and a three-point shot from Lemmon and sophomore Jake Hessey (Crestline, Ohio / Colonel Crawford). The Berg led 21-14 with 9:29 remaining in the first half. Bluffton battled back for a 39-37 lead heading into intermission.
The Beavers would open a 49-40 lead at the 14:59 mark in the second half, but the Student Princes battled back to tie the game at 55-55 with nine minutes remaining in the game.
Heidelberg held a slim 70-69 lead with 26 seconds when the Beavers Colt Cunningham made three from the charity stripe. Heidelberg had a chance to tie the game with seconds remaining, but a missed jumper and a turnover sealed the victory for the Beavers. Heidelberg returns to action Tuesday when they host Myers.
