Men’s Basketball Earns Postseason Bid

The Heidelberg College men’s basketball team, under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Duane Sheldon, has earned the No. 6 seed in the 2007 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. Heidelberg will face No. 3 Baldwin-Wallace College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 in Berea, Ohio. For those that cannot make the trip to Berea, the game will be broadcast on WTTF AM 1600.

The Berg finished the 2006-07 regular season with a 13-12 overall record and a 9-9 mark versus league opponents. Heidelberg stood sixth in the final league standings. It will be Heidelberg’s first appearance in the OAC Tournament since the 2003-04 season and it will be searching for the program’s first OAC Tournament Title. The Berg has finished second on five occasions, but the championship has eluded the program in 35 appearances.

Heidelberg has five players averaging double figures led by junior guard Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) with 13.7 points an outing. Backing Shriver is Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) (12.5), Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) (12.4), Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) (11.8) and Ron Higgins (Vermilion, Ohio / Firelands) (11.0). Shriver has recorded double-figures in the scoring column in the last 13-straight outings for the Berg.

Controlling the glass is the quartet of Schmidt, Lemmon, Higgins and Greg Tyson, Jr. (Lima, Ohio / Senior). The group has combined to pull down 574 rebounds. Lemmon grabs a team-high 7.0 boards a game.

Junior guard Matt Eberle (Grove City, Ohio / Central Crossing) and freshman Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) run the Berg offense. Eberle has dished out a team-high 61 assists, while Calver has 52 dimes to his credit on the year. Calver has emerged into the starting line up in the last three contests and has tallied 10 assists.
