Heidelberg Drops Regular Season Finale

The Heidelberg College men’s basketball team held a 31-27 lead at halftime, but a strong second half by host Muskingum College lead to a Muskie 78-66 Ohio Athletic Conference victory. The setback drops Heidelberg’s overall record to 13-12 and its OAC mark to 9-9, while Muskingum improves to 12-12 overall and 6-12 in the OAC.

Muskingum scored on its first three possessions of the second half, including an old-fashioned three-point play to take over the scoreboard, 34-33, with 16:15 left in the contest. Heidelberg pulled within one point, 38-37, following a lay up from Ron Higgins (Vermilion, Ohio / Firelands), with 13:50 on the clock, but that would be as close as the Berg would get.

Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) led five in double figures for the Berg with 13 points off the bench. Backing Szalay was Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) (12), Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) (11), Higgins (11) and Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) (10). Higgins led the way on the glass with eight rebounds.
