Heidelberg Falls On Road To John Carroll 91-86

The Heidelberg College men’s basketball team cut a 19-point deficit to as small as two, but John Carroll held on for the 91-86 win over Heidelberg. The Blue Streaks improve to 15-7 overall and 11-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Heidelberg falls to 13-9 and 9-6 in the OAC.

Junior Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) led all scorers with 24 points, while sophomore Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) came off the bench for 20. Freshman Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) chipped in 12 off the bench and a team-leading eight rebounds. Senior Ron Higgins (Vermilion, Ohio / Firelands) contributed 10 points.

Brandon Mimes led John Carroll with a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate Terry Walsh scored 17 points and grabbed five boards.

In the game’s opening eight minutes, John Carroll jumped out to an 18-6 lead capped by a layup and a shot from behind the arc by John Curran. The Student Princes cut the deficit to as small as six on a three-pointer by Shawn Shriver with 3:43 remaining in the half, but a pair of free throws by John Carroll’s Peter Moran and Brandon Mimes helped the Blue Streaks to a 36-27 halftime advantage.

A dunk by Heidelberg junior Greg Tyson, Jr. (Lima, Ohio / Senior) started the second half, but a 17-5 run gave John Carroll their largest lead of the contest, 53-34, with 14:45 remaining in the game. Heidelberg cut the deficit to two, 74-72, on a layup by Higgins at the 4:49 mark, but the Berg would not come any closer. The lead ballooned to 11 for the Blue Streaks with 38 seconds remaining, but a pair of three’s by Szalay made the final score 91-86 John Carroll.

Heidelberg returns home for their regular season home finale Saturday against Otterbein. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
