Heidelberg Puts Up Hard Fought Battle Against No. 1 Wooster

The Heidelberg College baseball team dropped a hard fought 5-2 non-conference game to the College of Wooster at Peaceful Valley today. Wooster entered today’s contest as the number one ranked team in the country according to the latest poll released by the American Baseball Coaches Association. The win improves Wooster to 29-1, while the Berg falls to 21-9.

Heidelberg got on the scoreboard first with an RBI single from Tyler Tocco (Dublin, Ohio / Coffman) in the second inning. Wooster quickly responded with a run of its own in the third inning, however the Berg continued to hold its ground and regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single from Matt Grassley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / North).

Scoring continued to take place for the Fighting Scots in the fourth. Wooster scored two runs on two hits to take control of the game. Heidelberg was held scoreless through the final six innings and Wooster scored two insurance runs in its final at bat.

Heidelberg finished with six hits compared to seven by Wooster. Leading the Heidelberg offense was Matt Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) with two hits.

Suffering the loss on the mound, despite a valiant effort was freshman right hander Andrew Hamman (Peru, Ind. / Peru). Hamman pitched 7.0 innings, allowing just four hits, while striking out eight.

Heidelberg returns to Ohio Athletic Conference action against Otterbein April 21. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Peaceful Valley.
