| Baseball Splits OAC Doubleheader At Capital Sophomore outfielder Matt Grassley's (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / North) triple scored Matt Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) in the eighth inning for a Heidelberg College 5-4 win in game one of an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Capital University. Unfortunately the Berg could not make it a sweep in Columbus, dropping game two 4-3. The split leaves Heidelberg at 15-7 overall and 3-1 in the OAC, while Capital stands at 8-10 overall and 2-2 in league action.
In game one Heidelberg trailed 4-3 in the seventh inning when Alex Rutter (Bowling Green, Ohio / Bowling Green) knocked in L.B. Emrhein (Seven Hills, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) to even the score at 4-4. Emrhein started the inning off with a single.
Heidelberg held Capital scoreless in the bottom half of the seventh inning to force extra innings. Decker led Heidelberg’s half of the inning off with a single and eventually rounded the bases to score on Grassley’s triple.
Earning the win on the mound was left-handed sophomore David Paddock (Westerville, Ohio / North). Paddock pitched an entire game, striking out five and gave up nine hits. Paddock gave up just two earned runs.
Leading the way at the plate was Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles), Rutter, Decker and Tony Pawlowicz (Montpelier, Ohio / Montpelier) with two hits apiece. Rutter knocked in two runs, while Decker crossed home plate twice.
In game two, Capital scored two runs in its last at bat to overcome a 3-2 deficit and won the ballgame. The Crusader’s hit a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning for the win.
Wentworth finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Rutter also recorded multiple hits with two, to go along with an RBI.
