Baseball Makes It Six Wins In A Row The Heidelberg College baseball team extended its win streak to six contests and it did not have to travel out of the Tiffin city limits to do so. The Berg made the trek across Tiffin to cross-town rival Division II Tiffin University and picked up two victories, 11-4 and 6-3. The doubleheader sweep improved the Berg to 11-3 overall. The victories came following two days of postponements due to inclement weather.
In game one, Heidelberg recorded 13 hits on its way to the 11-4 victory. Heidelberg broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the third inning and never relinquished its lead. Highlighting the game was a three-run home run by sophomore Tony Pawlowicz (Montpelier, Ohio / Montpelier) in the fifth inning to push Heidelberg’s lead to 8-2.
Offensively the Berg was led in game one by Pawlowicz and fellow classmate Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles) with 3-for-4 outings. Pawlowicz finished the game with five RBI, two runs scored, two doubles and one home run, while Wentworth also crossed home plate twice to go along with two RBI and a double. Also recording multiple hits in the win was L.B. Emrhein (Seven Hills, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) with two. Emrhein also scored a run.
Sophomore left-hander David Paddock (Westerville, Ohio / North) improved to 3-1 on the year with the victory on the mound. Paddock pitched 5.0 innings and gave up just five hits and two earned runs.
In the night cap, senior catcher Tyler Tocco (Dublin, Ohio / Coffman) ignited the Berg in the 6-3 win. Heidelberg faced a 3-0 deficit in the fourth inning when Tocco led the inning off with a double. Alex Rutter (Bowling Green, Ohio / Bowling Green) followed suit with a double of his own, scoring Tocco. Jack Bault (Randolph, Ohio / Waterloo) knocked in Rutter with an RBI single to pull the Berg within 3-2.
Pawlowicz continued his strong performance at the plate in the second game, knocking in the game-tying run on a double in the sixth inning. Bault scored on the Pawlowicz double following reaching the base paths after being hit by a pitch.
Tocco returned in the seventh inning, recording the game-winning RBI single. Tocco singled to score pinch runner Kyle Hintze (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont Ross). Hintze earned a spot on the base paths courtesy of a Cody James (Belle Center , Ohio / Benjamin Logan) base on balls. Heidelberg increased its lead on a two-run single from Bault in the same inning.
Junior Andrew McFarland (Mansfield, Ohio / Madison) earned the win on the mound, pitching 6.0 innings. McFarland gave up five hits and three earned runs, while striking out four. Senior Dan Machovina (Elyria, Ohio / Midview) pitched the final inning and earned his second save on the year in preserving the McFarland victory. Machovina faced just three batters in the final inning.
Heidelberg and Tiffin will conclude its three-game series tomorrow, March 26. A nine-inning game will be played at Herninger Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
