Seven Record Multiple Hits In ’Berg Victory

A three-run seventh inning for the Heidelberg College baseball team led to an eventual 14-7 victory over host Oglethorpe University today in Atlanta, Ga. The game was tied at 7-7 heading into the top of the seventh when Alex Rutter (Bowling Green, Ohio / Bowling Green) and Jack Bault (Randolph, Ohio / Waterloo) led off with back-to-back singles. Matt Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) laid down a sacrifice bunt to push the eventual game-winning run across the plate. Tony Pawlowicz (Montpelier, Ohio / Montpelier) followed Decker with a home run to left field to bring the run count to three for the inning.

             

Heidelberg held Oglethorpe scoreless through the final three innings of action and tallied four runs of its own to push the final score to 14-7. The win was the third-straight for Heidelberg who improves to 8-3 overall. Oglethorpe drops to 4-17 on the year with the setback.

             

The Berg recorded 18 hits on the day, with four coming on the end of Rutter’s bat. Rutter finished 4-for-6 with four runs scored and a double. L.B. Emhrein (Seven Hills, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Also recording multiple hits was Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles), Matt Grassley (Gross Pointe Woods, Mich. / North), Bault, Decker and Pawlowicz.

             

Earning the win on the mound was Steve Calevro (Perrysburg, Ohio / Perrysburg). Calevro pitched 2.0 innings, scattering two hits and gave up one earned run. The win improved Calevro to 3-0 on the year. Senior Dan Machovina (Elyria, Ohio / Midview) pitched the final three innings and gave up no runs and no hits, while striking out three batters to earn his first save in a ’Berg uniform.

             

Heidelberg, under the guidance of Matt Palm, concludes its two-week trip down south against Franklin & Marshall tomorrow. Game will be played at Oglethorpe beginning at noon. The Berg opens action up in Ohio against cross-town rival Tiffin University March 23 at Peaceful Valley, the home of Heidelberg baseball.
