Heidelberg Tops Rowan 5-3; Conlcudes Action In Florida at 5-2

The Heidelberg College baseball team ended its stay in Port Charlotte, Fla.. with a 5-3 victory over Rowan College. Overall the Berg posted a 5-2 overall record in the first half of its two-week trip down south. Heidelberg heads to Atlanta, Ga. today and will return to action against LaGrange on Sunday beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Heidelberg broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning with two runs. Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles) reached the bases on a single and Jack Bault (Randolph, Ohio / Waterloo) earned a trip on the base path with a base on balls. Matt Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) stepped to the plate and knocked in the Berg base runners with a two-out double down the left field line to put Heidelberg on top 2-0.

Tony Pawlowicz (Montpelier, Ohio / Montpelier) extended Heidelberg’s lead to 5-0 with a three-run home run to left field in the seventh inning. Pawlowicz knocked in Bault, who was hit by a pitch, and Decker, who reached on a single.

Rowan responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and one in its last at bat, but the Berg would never relinquish the lead.

Earning the win on the mound was sophomore left-hander David Paddock (Westerville, Ohio / North). Paddock pitched 6.1 innings, scattering four hits, while striking out three. Helping to preserve Paddocks’ win was the duo of Steve Calevro (Perrysburg, Ohio / Perrysburg) and Justin Ocheltree (Bellville, Ohio / Clearfork). Calevro and Ocheltree combined for two strike outs and gave up just two hits.

Offensively for the Berg, Wentworth finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Decker also recorded multiple hits with two and crossed home plate once.
