Heidelberg And Hanover Battle To 2-2 Tie Seniors Dimitar Nedkov and Brent Kehrle score first goal of the year The Heidelberg College men's soccer team came back from a 2-1 deficit to tie the Hanover Panthers at two.
Heidelberg senior Dimitar Nedkov (Sofia, Bulgaria) began the scoring 25:37 into the game when he finished a cross by sophomore Billy Banks (Hampton, Pa. / Hampton) from six yards out. The goal was Nedkov's first of the year while the assist was the second of the year for Banks.
Hanover tied the game 13 minutes later and took the lead in the second half in the 58 th minute.
The Student Princes tied the game at the 68:35 mark. Sophomore Raul Mendez (Mexico City, Mexico / Green Hills) booted a corner kick that sailed over everyone's head to the feet of a Panther defender. The clearing pass was intercepted by senior Brent Kehrle (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington) who found the back of the net and tied the score.
In the second overtime, Heidelberg was awarded a corner kick with less than ten seconds remaining. The corner kick found a 'Berg player but a block by the Hanover defense prevented the golden goal score.
For the game, Heidelberg outshot Hanover 33-11, including 7-4 in shots on goal. Freshman Brian Periman (Tucson, Ariz. / Sabino) grabbed two saves on the day and holds a record of 1-1-2 in goal on the season.
"We dominated the game from start to finish and created many opportunities," said head coach Brian Haley. "If we convert those chances, we win easily. We created opportunities and that is the sign of a great team." Heidelberg returns to action Tuesday against Ohio Dominican. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
