Heidelberg Splits At No. 30 Marietta

The Heidelberg College baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at No. 30 Marietta College today. Marietta won game one, 3-2, but Heidelberg responded with a 16-7 victory in the night cap. Following the split Heidelberg carries a 23-11 overall record and a 10-4 mark in league play.

             

To earn the split Heidelberg jumped out to an 11-2 lead after three innings and never looked back. Heidelberg was held scoreless in the first inning, but came back in the second to have its first five batters record hits, including a Tony Pawlowicz (Montpelier, Ohio / Montpelier) home run. The Berg scored six runs in the second and five in the third to take the early lead. The Berg concluded its scoring with five more runs in the sixth.

             

Earning the win on the mound was junior Andrew McFarland (Mansfield, Ohio / Madison). McFarland pitched 6.2 innings and gave up 11 hits, while striking out four. He also gave up just three earned runs.

             

Matt Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) and Alex Rutter (Bowling Green, Ohio / Bowling Green) each finished 3-for-5 to lead Heidelberg in the night cap. Rutter scored four runs, while Decker knocked in two runs. Also recording multiple hits in the win was Matt Grassley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / North), Pawlowicz, Matt Hille (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) and Tyler Tocco (Dublin, Ohio / Coffman).

             

In game one, Marietta took an early 2-0 lead after two innings, but Heidelberg responded in the third inning with two runs of its own. Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Oho / St. Charles) knocked in two runs on an RBI single. Scoring on the play was Tocco, who reached on a single, and L.B. Emrhein (Seven Hills, Ohio / Padua Franciscan), who reached the base paths on a double. Marietta scored the eventual game-winning run in the next inning.

             

Tocco led Heidelberg’s offense in game one, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

             

Heidelberg returns to action at Baldwin-Wallace tomorrow. The OAC doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
