Heidelberg Takes Two From Ohio Northern The Heidelberg College baseball team collected a pair of victories against visiting Ohio Northern University. The Berg took the first game 9-8 and the second 10-6. This improves Heidelberg to 18-7 overall and 5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while Ohio Northern drops to 8-13 overall and 2-4 in conference.
In game one, heading into the seventh inning the Polar Bears held an 8-7 lead. The Berg rallied scoring two runs to earn the win. Matt Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) started things off with a single and would round the bases and score on a Tyler Tocco (Dublin, Ohio / Coffman) double. Two batters later Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles) came to the plate and hit an infield single to score pinch runner Everett Thomas (Evansville, Ind. / Harrison) for the game-winning run. Thomas was pinch running for designated hitter Cody James (Belle Center, Ohio / Logan Elm) who hit into a fielder’s choice.
Steve Calevro (Perrysburg, Ohio / Perrysburg) got the win for the Berg moving him to 5-0 on the year. Calevro pitched 3.2 innings in relief, giving up four hits, while striking out three.
In the night cap the Polar Bears started off strong taking a one run lead after their first at bat, but this lead did not last long. Heidelberg scored three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the first to hold a 3-1 advantage. Alex Rutter (Bowling Green, Ohio / Bowling Green) singled scoring Wentworth, two batters later Decker hit his first home run of the season, knocking in Tony Pawlowicz (Montpelier, Ohio / Montpelier) in the process. Pawlowicz hit into a fielder’s choice to reach the base paths.
Ohio Northern scored four runs in the top of the second and another in the third compared to three Heidelberg runs to tie the game at 6-6 after three innings of action. Heidelberg went on to hold ONU scoreless over the final four innings and plated four runs of its own to earn the win.
Earning the win for the Berg was Bryan Hartman (Circleville, Ohio / Circleville). Hartman pitched 4.2 innings and gave up four hits and one earned run.
Leading the way for Heidelberg at the plate for the day was Decker who had five hits including a home run and James and Tocco who had four hits each.
