Anthropology Department

Anthropology is a traditional liberal arts discipline that considers the nature and dynamics of human culture and society. Humans are to a large degree the product of their specific social setting and associated cultural tradition; therefore, our vision of the world around us is often blocked by the limitations of our own circumstances. Anthropology addresses this tremendous variation in the human experience.

Heidelberg 's Center for Historic & Military Archaeology (CHMA) is a research facility committed to undergraduate education and is operated in conjunction with the anthropology major and the archaeology minor. CHMA provides opportunities for laboratory work associated with actual research on the prehistoric and historic archaeology of the region and is also a source for independent and directed student research.

Our curriculum ensures the student receives a broad exposure to the field of anthropology with many experimental opportunities giving them the breadth necessary for graduate studies or other career choices. The CHMA is structured to give students with a sincere focus in archaeology more first-hand opportunities to develop their archaeological, analytical and communication skills.
