Toledo Councilman Rob Ludeman, declaring that "it is time in this county to look forward to the future," formally began his campaign for Lucas County commissioner yesterday by promising to be independent and by proposing a look at reducing the county sales tax.
Mr. Ludeman, 47, a Republican, offered an outline of his campaign during remarks at the Toledo Board of Realtors office in Sylvania Township. A councilman since January, 1994, he is a Realtor and a former trustee of the group.
He is challenging Commissioner Bill Copeland, 78, a Democrat, who has been in office since 1990.
Both candidates appeared, unchallenged, on the March 7 primary election ballot.
Mr. Ludeman said he would be an independent voice on the commissioners and criticized his opponent's signs, which state prominently Mr. Copeland's party affiliation.
Mr. Ludeman said his signs would say only, "Rob Ludeman for Lucas County commissioner."
Mr. Copeland said last night, "I'll talk to him on the [campaign] trail. All I want to talk about is my performance as a county commissioner." He declined to comment further.
Mr. Ludeman chided the commissioners for not being involved in the Maumee River crossing project and for being late in supporting preservation efforts of the historic Fallen Timbers battlefield.
