ARCHAEOLOGY LESSONS FOR
CLASSROOM APPLICATION

By Jane E. Piechocki

A teacher and a graduate student worker on the Johnson's Island Experience project.

Since most of my teaching experience is with middle-school aged students, I chose to gear my lessons mostly toward grades 5-9. I tried to incorporate as many ideas as I could into each one. Most of these "archaeology"- centered lessons involve basic classroom courses to make them easy to implement in the current curriculum in any school. Some of the lessons are fairly easy to execute and take only a few days to accomplish. One, the play performance, is more complicated and takes a few weeks to complete. I did compose one elementary level lesson for grades K-3 on categorizing, since that is one vital skill used in reading.

The nine other lessons are intended for use, one per month, in various areas a junior high teacher might like to try to include whole language, inter-curricular experiences within the subject taught. The lessons are easily modified to fit nearly any classroom situation. I have actually used a number of these same ideas in my own classes, and they are effective teaching devices.

I assure you, the archaeology dig was forever burned into my brain and will increase my enthusiasm for integrating it into my classroom lessons immensely.
